Why I Loved Making a Six the Musical Hoodie

Six the Musical PosterI love Six the Musical as it is one of my special interests. I decided to make a Six the Musical Hoodie as I knew I would see the show again on the third of October. I started the project in early September, before my birthday.

Warning: This is a messy project. If you don’t like the feel of glue on your fingers, this is probably not the project for you.

Before going back to see Six the Musical, I decided I wanted to make a Six the Musical themed jacket inspired by the official denim jackets that the cast wears.

I had initially planned to use a denim jacket for the project, but I didn’t like the jacket as it felt too tight across the shoulders. I am happy with wearing jeans, so the fabric used wasn’t the problem, but rather how the garment fitted. Since I am autistic, it is something I couldn’t ignore. We returned the jacket, and I decided to switch to a hoodie. I brought the hoodie from Sports Direct.

For the project, I used gem tac glue, felt to glue the gems on, and gold, silver, and purple gems. I already had the felt and brought the glue and gems on Amazon. You can find the gem tac here and the gems here. I used 4mm gems in the colours Ultra Violet, Golden Shadow, and Clear.

Mum and I started making the logo which would go on the back of the hoodie. We decided to start with the I as that would be the simplest letter to do. What we would do is Mum would start each letter, and I would finish it. She did the bottom few rows for the I while I finished it, and she did part of the S and X.

We completed the S second since that would be the most complex letter to do. However, with the S, I started doing the rest of the outline and planned to fill the rest in when Mum said it would be easier to do it row by row, so I made sure I had the correct number of gems in the letter. I then started doing it by row, which I found was a little more complicated. However, it still looks effective even if there are a couple of small spaces where there aren’t any gems.

The X was the last letter we focused on, and I found it challenging to keep everything straight. However, I am still happy with the result.

I found I could do the crown over the I on my own and found it relatively easy as I kept the design simple. Overall, the effect of the SIX looks impressive, and I love how it looks. It took us a weekend and Monday evening to finish everything, and it was completely dry on Tuesday since you need to leave the gem tac glue to dry for twenty-four hours.

Creating the “VI”

For the front of my Six the Musical Hoodie, I decided to have the roman numerical six on the front since that appears on some of the jackets. I am using a La Gear Hoodie with a white logo on it. I wanted to cover it up and decided that a small crown would work. Mum and I talked about the hoodie and decided it would look strange if I have a crown on top of the roman numerical six. It would mean the crown would either be too big, or it would be in a strange place.

Once Mum created a template I could use, I cut out the V so I could use the outline to create the V. It took an evening to create the V, and like with the Six logo, I left it to dry overnight. I also cut out the I and used the template to create it before leaving it to dry overnight.

Once it dried, I found the purple doesn’t show up well on the black felt, so I created a smaller purple I and put silver gems around it to see if that would work. The following day, we could see that the purple shows up far better, so I covered the outside of the VI in silver so it would show up better. It looks effective, and I love how it turned out.

Gluing the Felt to the Hoodie

I was not sure if the GemTac glue I used to glue on the gems would glue the felt to the hoodie, so I decided to try a test run. I tried it on a pair of my brother’s tracksuit bottoms as he was going to throw them out, and I cut out the sample I and glued it on using the GemTac glue and left it to dry overnight.

The glue holds firm, and there is no chance of the I coming off. I will need to make sure I get the glue into the corners otherwise the corners aren’t glued to the fabric. Mum ended up gluing the Six logo and the VI on because I would want it to be straight.

My Six the Musical Hoodie: Final Results

Six the Musical Hoodie and hatThe hoodie turned out incredible, and I love it. I wore it when I visited Coventry to watch Six the Musical for a second time. The hoodie is comfortable and I can barely feel the sequins on the back. While watching the show, I forgot I was wearing the Six the Musical hoodie, and just had a great time.

I now have the hoodie, along with my Six hat, hanging off the back of my bedroom door. I positioned the hoodie so you can see the Six logo on the back.
