Why I Like The Twilight Saga

The Twilight Saga is a fantasy romance book series by Stephenie Meyer that contains Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, Life and Death, and Midnight Sun. The novels focus on Bella Swan as she falls for Edward Cullen and as she discovers the existence of vampires and werewolves.

As I have not read either Life and Death or Midnight Sun, I cannot talk about these books in detail. The first four books were adapted into movies, with Breaking Dawn split into Breaking Dawn part 1 and Breaking Dawn part 2.

I have an interesting relationship with The Twilight Saga since I have periods of being interested in the franchise before forgetting about it. However, now I’m planning on writing supernatural stories for my course, I thought I would share my interest in Twilight with everyone.

I am including spoilers in this blog post, so if you want to read the books or watch the films, please come back when you have.

The Twilight Saga: why it interests me

I am not entirely sure why Twilight interests me, but I did pick up the books when I was a teenager and read them quickly. Some of the characters, mainly the villains, are interesting and dynamic. The main family, the Cullens, are pretty interesting, too. Each member has different backstories, personalities, and even abilities, making them different.

One example is Carlisle, who is the matriarch of the family. He is compassionate and became a doctor so he could help people. After his transformation, he knew he didn’t want to hurt people and started hunting animals instead of humans. The other vampires in his coven, which Carlisle refers to as his family, use him for inspiration for why they hunt animals instead of people.

The books have a lot of moments I enjoy, and in the past, I have preferred the books to the films since the books add more depth to the world.

My favourite characters in The Twilight Saga

I have a few favourite characters within the Twilight Saga. Unfortunately, many of the minor characters are more entertaining than Edward, Bella, and Jacob. I can’t class any of these three as my favourites since Bella acts as a blank slate for the fans, and I do question how Edward and Jacob act throughout the series.

Some of my favourite characters come from the Cullen family, mainly Carlisle, Esme, Jasper, Alice, Emmett, and Rosalie. Carlisle and Esme act like parents for the group and offer support when needed. Since Carlisle is a doctor, he can treat Bella whenever she gets into an accident, as we see in the film Eclipse when he wraps Bella’s hand with a bandage after she punches Jacob. Alice Cullen is one of my favourites since she can see the future and is always looking out for Bella.

I also like Jacob’s character in Twilight and New Moon before they seem to destroy his character in Eclipse, particularly in the film. The love triangle entranced millions, but I would question Jacob’s actions throughout Eclipse as Bella made it clear she would always choose Edward Cullen. I love his friendship with Bella in New Moon, even after Jacob discovers he is a werewolf. If tries to distance himself from Bella, which fails. However, they do grow closer again when Bella discovers that the pack Jacob’s part of are all werewolves.

 

Twilight Saga Favourite Characters: New Moon

New Moon introduces the Volturi, a powerful vampire coven that creates the laws all vampires must follow. My favourite character from this coven is Jane. I am not entirely sure why she is my favourite, but she seems more compelling than Bella. If you want to learn more about Jane’s backstory before she was turned into a vampire, there is a short film on YouTube called Consumed, which you can watch here. I enjoyed watching the short film since you can understand what Jane and Alec went through before they joined the Volturi.

Twilight Saga Favourite Characters: Eclipse

Other favourites of mine include Bree Tanner, a part of the army created from newborn vampires to destroy the Cullens. After reading The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, I could emphasise with Bree, and it certainly made me emotional when she died since she’s barely developed in Eclipse or in the film. As a newborn vampire without any training or being taught the rules, Bree Tanner is killed by the Volturi after the battle, despite surrendering to Carlisle. Her coven is why there are mysterious killings in Seattle, a city close to Forks.

Twilight Saga Favourite Characters: Breaking Dawn

So many characters are introduced in Breaking Dawn that it’s almost impossible to keep track of them all. However, one character that stands out to me is Renesmee, who is introduced in Breaking Dawn Part One. She is a vampire-human hybrid and was born while Bella was human. Renesmee has the power to infiltrate minds and show people what she wants them to see, and her powers can break through shields. Her power is critical throughout the book and film since the Volturi mistake Renesmee for an immortal child and want to destroy her. However, the Cullens and their witnesses prove Renesmee isn’t immortal, making the Volturi leave the family in peace.

Most readers do not seem to be a fan of Renesmee, but I quite like her. People might not like her because Jacob imprints on her, which I also find strange. I do question why Stephenie Meyer chose to go down that path, but it does save the Cullens in Breaking Dawn, which meant Bella could wake up as a vampire.

I also like Seth, who is properly developed in Breaking Dawn, so I am including him here rather than in Eclipse since we only see him in his wolf form in the film. Seth acts like a little brother, and he has a friendship with Edward and is friendly with the other Cullens.

Twilight Saga fanfiction

There is a lot of interesting fanfiction for The Twilight Saga, which you can find on fanfiction.net, Wattpad, and A03. The links I’ve included lead to a page to help you find different Twilight fanfictions. For A03, I included a link that leads to the fanfictions based on the movies, but you can find ones based on the books. I have read a lot, and the authors write many interesting stories.
