Why I Love Rainbow Magic

favourite Rainbow Magic books

I enjoy reading Rainbow Magic fanfiction, and there are two main sites I use to search for it. I am also writing my own fanfiction, which I will post on A03. You can find the link to my A03 account in my blog post about fanfiction.

Why I have an interest in Rainbow Magic

I have been interested in Rainbow Magic for some time and have collected the books for years. I loved reading them when I was younger but gave away most of my books as I grew out of them. However, I kept some of my favourites at the time. As I entered sixth form, I was getting stressed out easily, especially as my A levels grew closer. My interests started regressing, and I started collecting the books again. I would bring a couple to school that I could read at lunchtime. Since I was not with peers my age and in a safe space, no one was worrying about what I was reading in my own time.

As my Rainbow Magic collection grew, I had to decide whether to focus on the older or more recent books. Initially, I started by collecting the older books and completing the series I wanted to do for my fanfiction. Now, I am collecting the more recent books as I think about the direction I want my fanfiction to go.

My favourite Rainbow Magic series

I have three favourite Rainbow Magic series.

Rainbow Magic Rainbow Fairies

The Rainbow Fairies are the very first series published in 2003. I remember reading this series when I was young, and I loved it. Even now, I enjoy going back to this series. Without the Rainbow Fairies, the rest of the series would not exist.

Rainbow Magic Fairytale FairiesRainbow Magic Storybook Fairies

I love fairy tales, so Fairytale Fairies and Storybook Fairies rank similarly. The Fairytale Fairies focus on four different fairy tales that feature princesses: Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella, and The Little Mermaid. Meanwhile, the Storybook Fairies have a range of different fairy tales: Thumbelina, Goldilocks, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood.

While these eight fairies focus on fairy tales, the two groups have different jobs. The Fairytale Fairies ensure that their characters stay within their books, while the Storybook Fairies are responsible for making their stories fun to read.

My favourite Rainbow Magic special

Rainbow Magic Holly and Hope

I have two special books I enjoy: Holly the Christmas Fairy and Hope the Welcome Fairy.

Rainbow Magic Holly the Christmas Fairy

Holly the Christmas Fairy was the first special published, and I remember reading it as a child. It incorporates a lot of magic (which is natural since it is a Rainbow Magic book), but it also introduces Santa Claus, who does appear in several more Christmassy Rainbow Magic books. As this was the first special I ever read, it holds a special place in my heart.

Rainbow Magic Hope the Welcome Fairy

Hope the Welcome Fairy is my favourite special due to the amount of diversity within the story. We are introduced to Gracie and Khadijah, two new main characters who will go on to help Rachel and Kirsty with their fairy adventures. Both Gracie and Khadijah are people of colour, and Gracie has a disability. What first drew me to Hope the Welcome Fairy was that Gracie has two mums. This is the first time we see an LGBTQ+ relationship in the Rainbow Magic series, and they have woven it in well in between the adventure.

I decided to read Hope the Welcome Fairy as I wanted to see if I could make it work in my Rainbow Magic fanfiction.

My favourite Rainbow Magic one-off

Rainbow Magic Felicia the Fidget Toy Fairy

Felicia the Fidget Toy Fairy is my favourite one-off since I use fidget toys a lot. This was the last book released before Hope the Welcome Fairy was published, so it is the last book that has only Rachel and Kirsty as the main characters.

There had been a conversation on the Rainbow Magic fandom site that Felicia might have been the first autistic fairy. While I loved reading this story, I couldn’t find any evidence that shows that Felicia is definitely autistic.

The best places to find Rainbow Magic fanfiction

There are several sites dedicated to fanfiction, but I will focus on the three websites I use, fanfiction.net, Wattpad, and A03.

Rainbow Magic fanfiction on fanfiction.net

Rainbow Magic fanfiction on fanfiction.net

Fanfiction.net is a great place to find fanfiction about Rainbow Magic. There are only around thirty works at the time of writing this, so fanfiction.net only has a few options. There are some fanfictions there, but if you want more options, it is best to look elsewhere.

Rainbow Magic fanfiction on Wattpad

Rainbow Magic fanfiction on Wattpad

The tagging system for Wattpad makes searching for Rainbow Magic fanfictions difficult. It also does not help that things like My Little Pony and original works appear when you initially search for Rainbow Magic. If you refine the tag by “fairies”, I found a lot of Winx Club comes up. There is no easy way to find Rainbow Magic fanfiction here.

Rainbow Magic fanfiction on A03

Rainbow Magic fanfiction on A03

A03 is the best place to find Rainbow Magic fanfiction. It is easy to search for what you want, and there are more works here than on fanfiction.net. Many stories are for general audiences, and there are currently options for teens and up and not rated.

There is an option not to rate the content rating of your work, but that means it will be rated as explicit-rated content and will not show up if you don’t tick the box marked “show me adult content without checking”.  If you do this, you can still access the work, but a warning will pop up saying that the work could contain adult content and if you proceed, you agree to such content.

I had switched off the “show me adult content without checking” to see how it would work. I will keep it on for now as it would let me double-check what tags are used and if I want to read it. It works with mature, not rated, and explicit works.

Struggles with writing Rainbow Magic fanfiction

I wanted to write Rainbow Magic fanfiction for a long time, but the first two times I attempted it, I found I struggled. Both of these attempts are still up on A03.

The first time I tried, I focused on my main OC, Emma Smith-White, and her transfer to a boarding school. I mainly focused on Six and The Sarah Jane Adventures in this fanfiction. I didn’t even get to writing the Rainbow Magic books because I soon lost interest. Since I included so many characters and had so much going on, I struggled to think about where it would go. As I was also writing Emma’s Six on fanfiction.net, I wanted to focus on that.

My second attempt had a character called Bree Smith-White. I had fewer characters in this, but I set it on an alien planet and made it vastly different from Earth. While I did get onto the fairies, I only got up to Amber when I stopped writing it. The other fandoms I included were The Sarah Jane Adventures and Twilight. I ended up abandoning this work because the planet looked too different from Earth, and I couldn’t imagine what it would look like.

My current attempt at a Rainbow Magic fanfiction

The Rainbow Magic fanfiction series I'm currently working on

I am writing the first chapter of my third attempt at Rainbow Magic fanfiction. I have written Christmas-themed one-shots for the series already, which I have posted under the series “Aurora’s Hybrid Academy”. The other fandoms I have included so far is Titanic (both the 1997 film and the 2012 series), and The Sarah Jane Adventures. I might include more fandoms over time, especially if I get to writing Hope the Welcome Fairy.

I also created a series called Aurora’s Alternate Hybrid Academy, where I placed stories that also contain Melody from The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea. Since I’m no longer planning on using Melody but still want to keep these stories up, I put them in a different series.

Some of the stories do fit in with my current version of Aurora’s Hybrid Academy, so I will need to update the series.

My OC in this is Aurora, who will be half-human and half-fairy. She is also my first autistic character, and I did a lot of research to make her seem authentic. Since I wanted to write an autistic character for some time, I thought trying it in fanfiction would work well.

If you want to find the series “Aurora’s Hybrid Academy”, you can find it here.

If you’d like to find more of my special interests, you can find them here.
